RELATED: What Is DNS, and Should I Use Some other DNS Server?

DNS servers work past matching the domain names you type into apps—similar web browsers—to their associated IP address. When you type a domain name into your browser, for example, your PC contacts the DNS servers information technology has listed, the server looks upwardly the IP accost for that domain proper name, and then the PC can fire off it's browsing request to that IP accost. The problem is that about ISPs maintain DNS servers that can be a niggling on the slow and unreliable side. Google and OpenDNS both maintain their own, free, public DNS servers that are typically much faster and more reliable. You only have to tell your reckoner to use them.

Notation: The techniques in this commodity piece of work in Windows 7, 8, and 10.

Right-click the network status icon in your system tray, and and so click "Open up the Network and Sharing Centre" on the context card.

In the "Network Connections" window, correct-click the connection for which you want to modify the DNS settings, and then click "Backdrop" on the context carte du jour.

In the properties window, select "Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP / IPv4)" on the list, and and then click the "Properties" push button.

The bottom half of the "Net Protocol Version iv (TCP / IPv4) Properties" window shows the DNS settings. Select the "Employ the following DNS server addresses" option. Next, type in the IP addresses for the preferred and alternate DNS servers you want to use. Here are the IP addresses for Google DNS and Open DNS:

Google DNS

Preferred: 8.viii.viii.8
Alternate: eight.viii.4.4

OpenDNS

Preferred: 208.67.222.222
Alternating: 208.67.220.220
